I was following the Thursday night game on NFL.com, why did Miami call a timeout at the end of their last drive? clock moving after a 3rd down run play with under a minute to go, let it run down to nothing, take the delay of game if you're just going to run on 4th down anyway...
seemed like it saved way too much time for Carolina's last effort drive to tie the game.

Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread

They called a timout with one second left on the playclock to .....run the ball. I have no idea why. It was a stupid, stupid, stupid call by the Miami coach. It was worse than the Belichick brain fart. Their kicker was 16-17 on the year. A 45 yard field goal wins the game. Of course they won anyhow. If they had lost though, who am I kidding. No one cares about Miami and Carolina.

That's about 450 messages of idiots who hate the Patriots and only know the word "cheat", 450 messages of idiots who love the Patriots and only know "3 rings", then only 50 coherent messages discussing why they believe it was a bad call, and 50 coherent messages discussing why they think it was a good call.
I think the lesson here is "be glad that 96% of the NFL fanbase doesn't completely hate your team." The emotional content brings the whackjobs out.
By the way, I agree with Raiderjoe's spread on the Pats/Jets game. They're going to take it to the Jets in blowout fashion between the 20's, but still have trouble in the red zone - 30 - 13. Might be a good day to have Gostkowski on you FF team

by Purds :: Sun, 11/22/2009 - 1:49pm
THis morning on CBS pre-game show, they asked the four commentators to pick their SB predictions. Not a single one picked the Colts. They packed Pats (x3), Steelers, Vikes (x2), NO (x2). When Brown mentioned that no one picked the Colts, Boomer blew right by it and said the Bengals are the bigger threat to NE. Really? I know the Colts haven't won convincingly, but are they really that bad not to even get a mention?

Depending on where you are, it could be NFL rules. I believe if you're in the primary market for an NFL team and they're playing at home, you can only get two games during the day: your home team's game and the other conference's game in the other time slot.
413
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
by AndyE :: Mon, 11/23/2009 - 8:21am
You can get three games; the caveat is that you can't get a game opposite the home game. In this case, FOX had all the early games, so you got the FOX early and CBS late. Those of us with a late CBS home game (NYJ @ NE)* got two early games, and then our home stand.
* (NE game noted to prompt gratuitous vitriol from the 96% :)

To me, what was more inconceivable was the good coverage in the secondary which held up long enough to allow the 4-man rush to get the sack.
Redskins sans Haynesworth seem completely unprepared to deal with the Cowboys running game. Barber fumbles, DeAngelo Hall recovers, Tony Romo makes the tackle and both players are injured. Cut to break; who's the backup in Dallas these days? Kitna?

CLE 3- 0 FG Dawson 44
DET 3- 3 FG Hanson 31
CLE 10- 3 TD Massaquoi 59 pass from Quinn
CLE 17- 3 TD Stuckey 40 pass from Quinn
CLE 24- 3 TD Cribbs 4 pass from Quinn
DET 24-10 TD Brown 26 pass from Stafford
2nd QUARTER
DET 24-17 TD Smith 25 pass from Stafford

Nice goal line stand by the Colts. They have been on the short end of the stick on every close call/decision. Most teams would be way behind by now. (PS: The officials have gotten all the calls right, I think, but the Colts have been within inches of several good plays, only to have every one of them fail -- two fumbles reversed on replay; missed interception, etc.)

Yeah, that was awful. If anything, the spot was short. Dallas Clark's attempted spot was closer.
I'm not so sure that shouldn't have been a penalty of some sort for Clark to move the ball like he did.
But with 2:19 and a timeout, the Ravens still had a shot. Now they're basically screwed. That was a dumb desperation challenge.

Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread

I agree that Clark should have gotten a penalty. I don't agree that the spot was bad. The replays show that Wayne isn't down until he lands on his back (he's on top of the defender as they go to the ground), and I think he actually got a bad spot. Looked like he was way past the yard line.

No matter. Dumb play by Reed ends it. But wouldn't that have been an illegal forward pass, keeping possession?

they won IN SPITE of several terrible decisions he and arians and legishesky made throughout the year.
the Defense realistically carried the team to victory all year long.
this year with the defense falling back to earth due to some injuries, we're seeing that when you put the actual need to strategize in play, the team falls apart despite putting up gaudy "traditional" offensive statistics. His decision to keep Arians and the s/t coach speaks volumes about his hard-headedness and arrogance.
For the record, I had this S/N last year, and I posted throughout the season with it.

Oh, I remember your S/N from last year, so I'm not really surprised you haven't changed your mind on Omar. Still, from what I've seen of the Steelers offense, except for the strange belief the coaching staff has in Willie Parker, I don't really see the problems being the gameplan.
And, with the Giants are in long field goal range, so Fox is forced to cut away "to show the beginning of your game." I realize this is the NFL and that I'm certainly no expert on television rules, but can't this rule be suspended someplace where there is no second game?

not at all, when a defending SB champion misses the playoffs, that's a failed season.
The Steelers @ 6-4 need to win 5/6 remaining to earn a WC berth assuming realistic outcomes of the other contenders. 2 of those 6 games are against the Ravens. If you value DVOA at all (as you are posting on this site)... you'd have to admit that a 1-1 split with the Ravens (especially next week without Ben, Polamalu...) , that's a winout against OAK, CLE, GB, and MIA. Sure, on paper that sounds easy, but consider they've lost to KC, and CHI. Odds are they'll blow one, or lose both to Baltimore, and end up at 10-6, on the outside looking in.

Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread

Well, I am definitely an irrational Steeler fan, but I agree with you 100%. That was an awful loss. No way should the Chiefs have been within two touchdowns of the Steelers.
But oh well. It was fairly obvious from the start of the season that this team wasn't going deep in the playoffs. They're still talented, but they've just seemed curiously listless all year--sort of lackadaisical in an arrogant way, thinking they could just turn it on at any time and win the game. Combine that with the terrible playcalling of Arians and Tomlin (yes, they really are bad, although there are worse in some places in the league) and the fact that the defense is another year older, and you have a good but not terribly special team.
Just as a side note: could you have a more typical Steeler loss than this one? Kickoff return for touchdown, poor offensive playcalling, dropped interception by Ike Taylor... this loss could have come from any of the last 10 seasons or so.

It was amazingly blatant in this case. Completely idiotic play by the Cleveland DB; he couldn't have been any more obvious about it.
New England runs a bizarre-looking flea flicker (and I'm not sure that's the right term, truthfully) where the defense pays no attention to the fake run and yet Moss still has a possible TD that Brady just overthrows by a bit.
Then Belichick goes for it on fourth and six inches. So of course we have to hear more about 4th-and-two-gate.

Orton has suited up, but it's Simms doing the handoffs. And I mean handoffs, only one dropback on the first and only drive. Result: Stripsack recovery Chargers.
The Chargers are moving the ball with ease.
Broncos turnovers on offense, Chargers marching up and down the field with the AFC West on the line... I've seen this movie before...
During training camp, I was hearing that they were having trouble because he couldn't put any touch on his throws and with all of those short passes it was too hard for the receivers to catch. I'm not sure how true it was, but supposedly that's a big part of why Orton won the job.

I underestimated how much Favre would benefit from playing in a dome. As I have written and as can be seen in the numbers, Favre routinely faded down the stretch with the most likely cause being the weather. I grew up on a farm and every old farmer will tell you that the first thing that gets to you as you age is the weather. I suspect the cold just sapped Favre's energy.
But in MN with climate control, a good offensive line that rarely lets him get touched and those skill players he looks to have responded. That and the "power of spite". I think that is very real. Part of me says it's rather sad that a player would be desperate to have revenge but one cannot deny the results.
I would point out that, in the first 3-4 games, he was getting pressured and hit quite a lot. Since, they have been much better, whatever the reason.
Otherwise, I think you are very right that the situation has helped him more than some of us (myself included) thought. Especially compared to last year.

Jarvis Moss with an offsides. First time I've heard his name called this season. What a waste of draftpick. Shanahan was never good at recognizing defensive talent.
San Diego's direct snap package is seriously called the Wild Frog? Could there possibly be a less intimidating creature on which to base a NFL offensive package (Joey Harrington notwithstanding)?

Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread

I see why. That was a really bad throw by Sanchez.
I was watching NFL Matchup this morning and Hodge pointed out that Sanchez's biggest problem is he's hurrying throws and not setting his feet.
And I theorize that it's a bigger problem for Sanchez than for some others, because his arm just isn't very strong. It's not Chad Pennington-level (well, maybe pre-injury Pennington), but it's certainly not a cannon.
I can't believe I've gone from having one of the most promising young QB's in the league starting for my team, to pinning my hopes on Kyle Orton to play hurt...
I'm now just thinking "Norv is still San Diego's coach" . . .

On ESPN this morning (I was watching because they had interviewed Brian Burke for a segment.), they were discussing how "great" he was two weeks ago averaging 4.0 yards per carry and how it proved that he "could still be the 'great LT' of old."

In the first half Leigh Bodden, caught as many Sanchez passes as the entire Jets Team.
Also, what the hell is Bellicheck challenging there?
The Jets are getting after Brady in the second half. They're still having trouble covering Welker, but they're turning this into a game. They just got called for running into the kicker, but it doesn't amount to anything.
And after a short drive ends with Sanchez throwing off target to a receiver who doesn't even seem to realize that he's playing football (when the ball is near, he ducks like he's thinking, "whoa--what the hell was that?!"), the Jets punt away.
I'll admit I'm surprised by this information, but, not being a Pats fan or living in the area, I don't watch him all that often.

Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread

I think the lesson here is "be glad that 96% of the NFL fanbase doesn't completely hate your team." The emotional content brings the whackjobs out.
By the way, I agree with Raiderjoe's spread on the Pats/Jets game. They're going to take it to the Jets in blowout fashion between the 20's, but still have trouble in the red zone - 30 - 13. Might be a good day to have Gostkowski on you FF team
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Poor, poor Patsfans
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Or lose the game?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Isn't it odd that Sporano makes an even stupider playcall at a 28 yard line, leading late in the fourth quarter and no one even notices.
Re: How bad the Browns
The Browns have endured a lot of bad football since returning to Cleveland in 1999, winning just .325 percent of their games.
Read more: http://www.postgazette.com/pg/09326/1015412-66.stm#ixzz0Xa0EpGLt
Figure ten years, nine games, one playoff game - that's 170 altogether. .325 percent of that is - let's see - 0.55 games.
How did they make the 2002 playoffs if they only won half a game?
Re: How bad the Browns
In all fairness, that's a typo I could commit.

WTF?!
As a math-student that physically hurt me. I had nervous ticks throughout.
Re: How bad the Browns
Remember, in a democracy their votes count the same as yours.
Re: How bad the Browns
That's why democracy is a test of your ability to convince idiots to take your view.
Are the Colts really that bad?
THis morning on CBS pre-game show, they asked the four commentators to pick their SB predictions. Not a single one picked the Colts. They packed Pats (x3), Steelers, Vikes (x2), NO (x2). When Brown mentioned that no one picked the Colts, Boomer blew right by it and said the Bengals are the bigger threat to NE. Really? I know the Colts haven't won convincingly, but are they really that bad not to even get a mention?
Re: Are the Colts really that bad?
The CBS pre-game show personnel, IMHO, are the worst of the lot these days. You should take their failure to mention the Colts as a sign that the Colts have a really good chance.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I'm supposed to have Seahawks-Vikings and Colts-Ravens early followed by Jets-Patriots late. I'll hold my nose and start with Seahawks-Vikings and hope it doesn't suck as bad as UConn-ND did yesterday. I'm not holding my breath, though.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
You thought UConn-ND sucked? Really? Are you related to Charlie Weis or something?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
No, just a suffering Irish fan.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I thought you guys were all calling for Charlie's head.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I thought Weis's fate was sealed after the Navy and Pitt losses. If not, I thought it would be sealed after they lose to Stanford next week. I really expected them to beat UConn at home, regardless of how I feel about Weis.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, I was hoping for packers-niners, and get...seahawks-vikings. Maybe I'll watch the history channel or discovery. It'll probably be better, although as someone with adrian peterson on his FF team, I'll probably get sucked into watching the game anyways.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
No FF ties for me. I'm just a suffering Seahawks fan.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I checked, I guess the locals here in minnesota where I'm staying don't want anything to compete against the vikings. No early game besides the hawks-vikings.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Depending on where you are, it could be NFL rules. I believe if you're in the primary market for an NFL team and they're playing at home, you can only get two games during the day: your home team's game and the other conference's game in the other time slot.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
You can get three games; the caveat is that you can't get a game opposite the home game. In this case, FOX had all the early games, so you got the FOX early and CBS late. Those of us with a late CBS home game (NYJ @ NE)* got two early games, and then our home stand.
* (NE game noted to prompt gratuitous vitriol from the 96% :)
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I went with 3 friends to go watch the packers play seattle in the kingdome during the rick mirer years. My second favorite team to watch is the seahawks, but not nearly so much after they changed the colors. I thought they had the coolest uniforms (after green bay, of course) in the NFL. Mind you, I think I was about 10 when I first started liking them. The white on white unis are pretty cool, but dark blue and dark blue home unis? yuck.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I lived in the Puget Sound area when the Seahawks came into existence, which is why I'm a fan. I dislike the blue-on-blue uniforms, too.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
well, I'll just say this: the NFL tv rules are stupid.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
If you're interested, there's a decent explanation of the incredibly arcane NFL TV rules at this website: http://the506.com/nflmaps/
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
OMAR THE TARD AND HIS LACKEY Bob Ligashesky NEED TO GET SH!TCANNED.
ANOTHER KICKOFF RETURN TD GIVEN UP
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
wow. seahawks sack QB Vikings on 3rd down? Inconceivable!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
To me, what was more inconceivable was the good coverage in the secondary which held up long enough to allow the 4-man rush to get the sack.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yikes! Ravens meltdown alert.
Settle down, boys. You're professionals.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Redskins sans Haynesworth seem completely unprepared to deal with the Cowboys running game. Barber fumbles, DeAngelo Hall recovers, Tony Romo makes the tackle and both players are injured. Cut to break; who's the backup in Dallas these days? Kitna?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yes, I think it is Kitna. Wow, Romo hurt. Any idea how bad?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
He took a knee in the back and he's walking around. Hall's getting looked at on the trainer's bench. No report on either yet.
Campbell holds onto the ball longer than I'd like sometimes, but his pocket presence is really underrated among Redskins fans.
and... Ladell Betts cuts hard on his ankle while being tackled. Free Quinton Ganther!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Anyone on the board suffering through the CLE-DET pillow fight? I just saw that it's 3-3.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Two Seahawks sacks in the first quarter!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Superman wears Dallas Clark pajamas.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Dammit Seahawks. You can't jump offsides on 3rd and 16.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Clear holding on the left side of the line on that TD, but I'll take it. 7-0 Tampa Bay!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Excited about the TD, but it meant I had to actually root for Michael Clayton for a moment. I feel dirty.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
NFL.com must be broken. It's claiming a 59yd TD pass for the Browns. Is computer drunk?
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Another giant pass play Browns.
Lions are worse than Browns....hahahaha
Actually feel bad for the Lions fans. Misery luvs company
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
It really happened. It's funny how much less incompetent the Browns look without Derek Anderson behind center.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
After another false start by Heyer (in his defense, he was looking at a Spencer/Ware overload), the Skins face 3rd & 13. Troy Aikman points out Demarcus Ware waving his hand in front of his face, warning about the screen pass.
The call?
Screen to Cartwright. No gain. Punt. Gooooo playcalling!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
An OPI call on Sidney Rice. It was a blatant push-off. Vikings now have 3rd and 21.
There was a little pushing a shoving on the play. Dick Stockton said, "Ed Hochuli has to separate the players and, if anyone can, Hochuli can do it."
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
This was followed by a decent AP run that put the Vikings in FG range, but the Vikings were called for an illegal shift. 3rd and 26 Vikings. This play doesn't gain as many yards, so the Vikings punt from somewhere between the Seahawks 35 and 40. Touchback!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
TMQ scarcely needs to mention that it took the Blue Man Group but 2 snaps to pass that spot on the field.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The Ravens-Colts game features the wonderful announcing of Dan Dierdorf. He and Gumbel just both pronounced "homage" as "hommage" with a hard H. "They paid hommage to Johnny Unitas." Good lord.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Browns bad, Lions even worse
Sorry, Lions fans
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I think Manning just put a helmet on the towel boy and threw two him twice for about forty yards.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Jeff Saturday is auditioning for a role on the defense, showing off his tackling skills there on Ngata on that 4th and 1 play.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Barrett Ruud deserves a hell of a lot more press than he gets.
And Ronde Barber has been all over the field during this half.
Manning doesn't seem to
Manning doesn't seem to respect the Ravens at all in the secondary. He's taking some real chances down the field. Three ill advised throws into coverage so far, 2 INTs.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I am fervently hoping for a Colts loss today.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Charles Davis really is quite good (doing the Vikings game).
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, he almost makes Stockton tolerable.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Doesn't quite make Vikings QB tolerable though.
I've really had enough of his whole resurgence this year. Time for him to start chucking some INTs.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Not going to happen against the Seahawks defense.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I guess the Browns and Lions have decided that if they're going to suck, that at least they won't be boring:
1st QUARTER
CLE 3- 0 FG Dawson 44
DET 3- 3 FG Hanson 31
CLE 10- 3 TD Massaquoi 59 pass from Quinn
CLE 17- 3 TD Stuckey 40 pass from Quinn
CLE 24- 3 TD Cribbs 4 pass from Quinn
DET 24-10 TD Brown 26 pass from Stafford
2nd QUARTER
DET 24-17 TD Smith 25 pass from Stafford
DET 24-24 TD Johnson 75 pass from Stafford
Incredible that the Browns jump out to a three-score lead in the first quarter and cough it up before halftime!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Did *anyone* expect CLE-DET to be the most exciting football game of the day? ^_^
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Not me. I thought it would be rip-your-eyes-out-of-your-head unwatchable.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
To be fair, the most exciting games are usually between evenly matched opponents.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I just uttered these words:
"You know, the best thing about NFL Sunday Ticket this week is I get to watch the Browns and Lions".
These are not words I ever expected to say. It's actually been a lot of fun; been flipping between that and the Bucs' expected disintegration against the Saints.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Remember the CLE-BUF game (if you want to call it that) a few weeks ago? I was expecting worse from the CLE-DET game.
Detroit is up 31-29, Matt Stafford threw more touchdowns (four) than picks (one) and I am still looking for flying pigs...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The flying pigs are busy having a snowball fight in Hell.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I am always completely confused why people think higher scoring = more exciting. I find close games of all score levels exciting. Defense is half the game too you know!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
One of the most awesome things I've seen was four consecutive stops by my team's defense on 1st and goal at the 1, 2nd and goal at the 1, 3rd and goal at the 1, 4th and goal at the 1.
(This was not the Colts. This was my high school's team.)
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Offense is about making things happen. Defense is about preventing things from happening. Defense is exciting if it is your team on defense. Otherwise, things happening > things not happening.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I just saw highlights from CLE-DET. On the highlight plays, the defensive backs basically weren't covering the receivers at all. I just don't understand what they're actually doing on some of these plays.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The Browns run a fake FG at the end of the first half, get the first down... and then line up and kick a FG.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
ManGENIUS! Even Belichick wouldn't see that one coming.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
At halftime CBS showed the catfight on the Cowboys sideline betweeen the defensive coordinator and one of the players.
Anybody know the story behind it?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Another Great week for Favre (and this is only part way through the 3rd Quarter):
22/25 213 8.5 4 0 141.8
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Vernon Davis is the 49ers offense. How GB can forget about that guy is dumbfounding.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Steelers terrible REDZONE playcalling continues, en route to losing to the mighty KC Chiefs, despite outgaining them about 400-120 at the end of the 3rd.
WHY OMAR THE TARD keeps his crew of loser assistants around amazes me. LeBeau is the only coach on this team with anything resembling a clue.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Thought you were a Mets fan for a second there.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
T-Jack in at QB now for the Vikings. He came in at the last play of the third quarter or so.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Steelers O-Line now looks to be minus Kemoeatu and Starks.
Jeebus. Between injuries and OmarTard & Co. this team has no shot.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
So who has Billy Cundiff in fantasy?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
So, you think Jason Garrett is still the "hot" coaching candidate? I don't see him getting a job soon with the Cowboys offense playing the way it is and all those great NFL coaches waiting to get back in
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Nice goal line stand by the Colts. They have been on the short end of the stick on every close call/decision. Most teams would be way behind by now. (PS: The officials have gotten all the calls right, I think, but the Colts have been within inches of several good plays, only to have every one of them fail -- two fumbles reversed on replay; missed interception, etc.)
Not sure if the Colts will win, but they're playing tough.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Oh, the only call I would protest is a non-call. They haven't cared much about holding by offensive tackles, and that's hurt the Colts -- right there Mathis was begin mugged.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
They just picked up 15 yards on the late hit by Ngata. Fair call, but I've seen stuff like that allowed pretty regularly.
Pretty obvious hold on Mathis on that one play where Mason faked Lacey out of his shoes though.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Agreed. Just as I start whining, the Colts get a call that they likely wouldn't have gotten if Ngata wasn't such a big guy. That big, well, the refs were just looking at the impact of the hit, not the timing. Not fair to Ngata.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Colts shut the Ravens drive down after LT false starts and it's not called.
LMAO
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yep. This time, that oh-so-close call go against indy, but this time it works for the Colts.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Through three quarters, the Seahawks are averaging one yard rushing per quarter.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Steelers Secondary getting scorched right now.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
LMAO, tied 24-24 with 4:54 to play.
OMAR, you aren't going to get to "play Cincy again" this year if you lose this game, moron.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
and he puts it on the Defense's shoulders, 24-24 with about 2:10 to play, ball around the Chiefs 25.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
and GB almost lets SF score on a kickoff return. Man that unit is bad this year.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
And apparently Al Harris is injured.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
GB special teams let the 49ers stay in game giving up 76 yard return and then you know who scores a TD. Davis is THE target. Why is this so hard?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Another Colts game where the spot of the ball by refs could decide the game.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Ouch. Another opposing coach blowing the time outs.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
He gets progress on the stretch though, which was almost to the far edge of the 3. Looked like they only gave him the middle of it.
No matter. Dumb play by Reed ends it. But wouldn't that have been an illegal forward pass, keeping possession?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Alex Smith finding big holes in the GB defense. they have gone 55 yards in 2 plays
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Uh oh. NOLA goin' for a 4th and 2 and get stuffed. Didn't they learn anything?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I wonder if the Colts will have a choice to go for it on 4th and 2...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
PITT_KC going to OT
ATL_NYG going to OT (likely)
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
49ers score on 4th and 5 from the GB 10. The Packers are desperate to blow this game.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Ed Reed forward lateral failure.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Reed fumble is going to be a forward lateral. No turnover.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
BeerDork still hasn't noticed it was pitched forward.
I HATE ANNOUNCERS EVEN MORE THAN OMAR!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgMlDy2jP9s
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Unbelievable. Ed Reed with one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen. I actually can't believe what I just saw him do.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Steelers "win" the cointoss in OT
...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
WHy isn't that a forward lateral? Is that a penalty that Indy can decline?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I missed the outcome, going back to my Steeler game ...
it was clearly pitched at least 2 ball lengths forward...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
They simply said the ruling on the field stands. Perhaps they ruled that he was pulling the ball back in and is slipped out?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Well in that case... tuck rule!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I made it home just in time to see Ryan-to-Gonzalez to tie the game--great catch. I'm glad Tony Gonzalez is no longer in Kansas City.
Judging from the number of posts, must have been a boring day so far?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread

Batch coming in ...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Best wishes to Ben. Just hope he doesn't come back too soon and make it worse.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Fox studio host explains they can only stay with this overtime game until a quarter after the hour. WTF?!
I thank him greatly for saying that, though.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Why on Gods green earth was that a fumble by Reed? The ball was clearly going forward! Bad decision, surre, but a bad call, right?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I see Brandon Jacobs is out with a leg injury, but his stats suggest they won't miss him, at least today.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Arians with a ridiculous pitch sweep on 3rd and 3 ... and they lose yards and have to punt intstead of trying a long FG ....
now I have to hope the D wins the game, while it will hurt me in FF.
ugh.
FIRE OMAR AND HIS LACKEYS!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
This is what I love about Steelers Fans. Sure Tomlin won the Superbowl last year, but what has he done for you lately?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I agree with him, overall. I think Tomlin is a very poor gameday coach.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
they won IN SPITE of several terrible decisions he and arians and legishesky made throughout the year.
the Defense realistically carried the team to victory all year long.
this year with the defense falling back to earth due to some injuries, we're seeing that when you put the actual need to strategize in play, the team falls apart despite putting up gaudy "traditional" offensive statistics. His decision to keep Arians and the s/t coach speaks volumes about his hard-headedness and arrogance.
For the record, I had this S/N last year, and I posted throughout the season with it.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Oh, I remember your S/N from last year, so I'm not really surprised you haven't changed your mind on Omar. Still, from what I've seen of the Steelers offense, except for the strange belief the coaching staff has in Willie Parker, I don't really see the problems being the gameplan.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Ike Manos de Piedras Taylor ..........
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
¡Cómico!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
And, with the Giants are in long field goal range, so Fox is forced to cut away "to show the beginning of your game." I realize this is the NFL and that I'm certainly no expert on television rules, but can't this rule be suspended someplace where there is no second game?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Steelers Lose, Season Over.
FIRE OMAR TOMLIN.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I wonder if this is some crafty parody of irrational fan overreaction. Honestly, you make it hard to actually be upset about the result, because then I feel like I'm acting like a moron.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
not at all, when a defending SB champion misses the playoffs, that's a failed season.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
... By your own reasoning, the Steelers aren't out of the playoffs until they lose one of those games, so their season is by definition not over yet.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
OMG. The Chiefs go deep twice in a row. First time it's incomplete deep middle to Chambers. Second time Complete deep middle too Chambers pushed out of bounds at the 4. The chiefs a chip-shot away from upset of the year...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
There was an awesome block downfield on that one. The Chief just leveled his man and stood over them as he lay motionless, expecting him to try to get up. Wish I saw who it was.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The second play was a short completion that Chambers just ran out. It seems like Steelers have big problems catching someone who's already in motion.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Cleveland @ Detroit. Wow.
The Lions D must be as bas as the Chargers are at stopping the run. If this first drive is any indicator, Chris Simms might not have to throw a pass today.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
That was a hellaciously fun game. Seriously, I know he's Calvin Johnson and all, but stand in front of him and swat at the ball. Pushing him back out of the end zone after the ball is already in the air . . . wow. Heck of a fun game. Unless you live in Cleveland.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
WOW.
Appropriate ending to the Toilet Bowl. A ridiculous scramble by Stafford for about 15 seconds, throws a pick in the end zone, but the Browns commit DPI away from the throw. Untimed final down at the 1 gives the Lions a chance to win it.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
And as I psot, the first passing attempt results in a strip and a Chargers recovery. Oops.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The more Favre I see the more I think, holy crap MIN QBs have been bad recently. It is obviously a great situation for a QB, and their QBs have looked terrible before him.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Well Harvin arrived and Rice got better, so they're not exactly the same team as last year, but yeah. He's a pretty big improvement.
I had a pretty strong hunch they'd be very good this year with Rosenfels, but it wouldn't be this good. I hate it, but he has been playing extremely well and makes them a frightening team. And they don't have to play a meaningful game outdoors the rest of the way either, so there's no reason to expect him to slip late like usual.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
O man--what an ending to the Browns-Lions game!!
Giants win in OT--thanks, G-men (from a Saints' fan).
Chiefs win in OT.
Man, I love the NFL.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
So Cleveland screw up my LL team and still lose?
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
It is an iron law of nature: nothing good can come out of Cleveland. They can't even play badly when that would be a good thing!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The Browns found a way to lose? Should have seen a pass interference call on a hail mary play. That's a new way to lose for them.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I thought there was basically a rule among officials not to call PI on Hail Mary plays.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
It was amazingly blatant in this case. Completely idiotic play by the Cleveland DB; he couldn't have been any more obvious about it.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
yup, didn't give the ref an option not to call it
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
New England runs a bizarre-looking flea flicker (and I'm not sure that's the right term, truthfully) where the defense pays no attention to the fake run and yet Moss still has a possible TD that Brady just overthrows by a bit.
Then Belichick goes for it on fourth and six inches. So of course we have to hear more about 4th-and-two-gate.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
It's still in the first quarter and BB is already hard at work wasting a challenge.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, not a good challenge.
Proof: Phil Simms says it was good.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Just watching that big play to Chambers it looked like the Steelers kept waiting for someone else to get to Chambers. Just seemed weird having seen those guys attack runners for years.....
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Orton has suited up, but it's Simms doing the handoffs. And I mean handoffs, only one dropback on the first and only drive. Result: Stripsack recovery Chargers.
The Chargers are moving the ball with ease.
Broncos turnovers on offense, Chargers marching up and down the field with the AFC West on the line... I've seen this movie before...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I liked Simms when he was in Tampa, in spite of his father, but I'm afraid that injury just so derailed his career that he won't recover.
It looks like Moreno was having a good start, at least.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, I kinda have to agree. I did kind of like Simms too. But he's not going anywhere now.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
His skillset is suited pretty well to the offense that Denver runs.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
During training camp, I was hearing that they were having trouble because he couldn't put any touch on his throws and with all of those short passes it was too hard for the receivers to catch. I'm not sure how true it was, but supposedly that's a big part of why Orton won the job.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I thought he had a chance to be pretty good. Three years off hasn't helped him, though. It's a shame.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I would point out that, in the first 3-4 games, he was getting pressured and hit quite a lot. Since, they have been much better, whatever the reason.
Otherwise, I think you are very right that the situation has helped him more than some of us (myself included) thought. Especially compared to last year.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Aaaand the Chargers are up by seven. Nolan might have orchestrated two huge defensive turnarounds in one season...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Is this possibly the effect of the ancient secondary that Aaron was talking about early in the year?
I don't remember anyone saying whether it was true that previous old secondaries faded down the stretch, but it SOUNDS reasonable.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
"You've gotta throw and catch it in the NFL." -Phil Simms
In college, what do you have to do? Spit on it?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, Phil. Mind telling your SON that!?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
ZING!
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
That is the thread-winner.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
In Paul Johnson's offense, I think it would suffice to make the defense think you could throw and catch it if you wanted to.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Who was it who said that BB would take away Cotchery and Keller to leave Braylon to drop the ball? Sound about right after watching that Jet drive end with a BE drop on third down.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I like to call this strategy the "Plaxico" It usually works wonderfully.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Reverse from the "Wildfrog" costs San Diego a couple of yards. Not convinced by the play-call.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Jarvis Moss with an offsides. First time I've heard his name called this season. What a waste of draftpick. Shanahan was never good at recognizing defensive talent.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
100% agreement.
Is that the first time we've ever been in complete agreement about anything with the Broncos?
CAPTCHA: fracas Stenerud
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I've got more. I like Champ Bailey. do you share this feeling, sir?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
No. :)
Wild Frog
San Diego's direct snap package is seriously called the Wild Frog? Could there possibly be a less intimidating creature on which to base a NFL offensive package (Joey Harrington notwithstanding)?
Re: Wild Frog
Norv Turner?
Re: Wild Frog
Look up who LT played for in college, and what the mascot was.
Re: Wild Frog
I know that. It's still a farcical name for an offensive package.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Is it just me, or did they just miss a hold by Kaczur there on that play where the Jets got called for defensive holding?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
It's just you.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, I watched it a couple more times, and I think he was about to start holding until the DL changed direction.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
There are missed "holds" on every NFL play. Literally. Defensive players are just too fast, and the league doesn't want 6-9 to be a typical score.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Oh boy, Moss is going to be doing some jawing this week after that TD.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
They just announced that New England is still missing Morris and Taylor. I had forgotten Morris was still playing.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Simms misses Marshall in the flat. Boo boo birds with 10 mintues remaining in the second...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Booing already?
Am I, as usual, crazy for thinking that's overboard?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Completely overboard. He's been bad, though - at least as bad as last week.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Ryan Clady with a hold on Merriman. You know your passrusher is back from injury, when Clady needs to hold him!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
A bomb to Welker. Is that the first bomb of his career?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Orton looks like he's coming in
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Wow.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Thoughts on the first 20 minutes of NE-NYJ:
Patriots are very good. Jets are average and saddled wtih a rookie QB (the star of my Loser League team!). That is all.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I see why. That was a really bad throw by Sanchez.
I was watching NFL Matchup this morning and Hodge pointed out that Sanchez's biggest problem is he's hurrying throws and not setting his feet.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
And I theorize that it's a bigger problem for Sanchez than for some others, because his arm just isn't very strong. It's not Chad Pennington-level (well, maybe pre-injury Pennington), but it's certainly not a cannon.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Uuuh... Orton throwing warm-up passes... Please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please.
Dawkins sidelined with neckinjury. Ugh.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I can't believe I've gone from having one of the most promising young QB's in the league starting for my team, to pinning my hopes on Kyle Orton to play hurt...
Chargers get 20 yards on 3-and-1 to Jackson.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
You have to get over it at some point, you know.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
But it's so hard!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Remember Jake Plummer?
That should make you happy to see Orton. If not, think about Jarious Jackson.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Do the Patriots lead the league in guys with hair sticking out of their helmets? It sure seems like they have a lot.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
ORton in the game. The Bronco's are clearly feeling desparate
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Orton: 3/3. 1st & Goal Denver.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Hail Kyle Orton!
(I just wanted to say it once.)
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Keading makes it 13-0 Chargers. Holy moses. Blowout lurking here, pending Simms under center.
Edit: Orton in!!! Let's go, Broncos!!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
And on the next play, Moreno fumbles and it's a touchback. Wow. Denver Challenging.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Ruling stands. Fumble, and SD ball.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I'm now just thinking "Norv is still San Diego's coach" . . .
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Orton picked off after a SD 3 & out
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The rookie fumbles on the one. IT was forced by the knee of his own guard. The fluke plays are comming back to bite the Broncos. Still making payments on the Stokley tip drill...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
How long does San Diego keep giving LdT a decent number of carries?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Cromartie pisck it off. Goodnight guys - have a nice one.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
So are there still people out there who don't think LdT is done? SD rush looks awful.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
On ESPN this morning (I was watching because they had interviewed Brian Burke for a segment.), they were discussing how "great" he was two weeks ago averaging 4.0 yards per carry and how it proved that he "could still be the 'great LT' of old."
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Since every week we hear announcers fawn over the greatness of Kevin Faulk, can they still call him an "unheralded hero?"
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Top Raiders performers vs. the Bengals:
Passing: Gradkowski
Rushing: Fargas
Recieving: Z. Miller and a guy called L. Lawton.
Players not mentioned: Heyward-Bey, JaMarcus Russel, Darren McFadden. All top-10 picks.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I (thankfully) have not seen Heyward-Bey play. Does he have any possibility of turning into something? Al Davis used to pick wideouts well.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Trying to find positives here. LT is toast. He's absolutely done. So far below replacement level... He's getting carries out of curtosy (sp?) at this point.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Welker deep again. What on earth is going on?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Apparently all the good football game karma was spent on the early games. The late games suck.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Graphic: "Welker--6th straight game with 8+ rec."
Wow.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Spoke too soon--it's not a catch and they're now reviewing. The replay is quite obvious.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Play reversed, but the officials make a major mistake and respot the Patriots back six yards. Credit to the announcers that they see it immediately. They're fixing it now, but it took them forever to do it.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Defense waking up... Orton makes his defense play better too... He's the new Brett Favre!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Cutler already has that title.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Don't start with me. I'm struggleng to keep away the rants as it is.
Besides, Cutler makes his defenses worse...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after Sunday's game that Ben Roethlisberger's head injury was "concussion oriented."
Seriously? Its a concussion or it isn't. If he even used the word, it clearly is.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Brilliant. "Concussion-oriented."
Total nonsense but we all know what it means, and yet it's what he'll use next week to say that Roethlisberger can play because "It wasn't a concussion and he's fine now."
Maybe I'm overly cynical, but that's what I expect.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Who on earth would buy that? I really hope that doesn't come to pass.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I have been told many times I'm an idiot for wanting a rule that players with concussions can't come back into the same game. People are total morons about concussions, even more so than they are about other things.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I may be a dumb homer, but I don't think you're an idiot for wanting that. I just find it hard to believe that the C-word would even pass Mike Tomlin's lips if he were planning a stunt like that, but you may be right :|
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Maybe he meant to say his QB is being tested? How long does a concussion test take, anyway?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Graphic:
Broncos drives ended with:
Fumble
Punt
Punt
Fumble
INT.
And the Broncos are only down 13. I'm not giving the defense enough credit.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Both the fumbles near the goal line. If not for those, Denver might have two touchdowns(Might).
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Sure (Morenos fumbe was a guaranteed TD). However I think I'd take 13 points pr. half against Phillip Rivers...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Raiders off to slow start but came on in late 2nd quatert. 14-7 Bnegals lead, once was 1-40. Raiders gooing to take this game. C Schillens with good game so far. very good Wr. if have fantasy football tram pick him up and he help you team win
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Wow. Moreno having a breakout game? ~6.5 ypc.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Haven't looked at the numbers yet, but he seems boom-bust. Plus he has the fumble on the one (the worst thing you can do in football.).
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Nah, I'm pretty sure that's trying to run a spike play with 1 second left on the clock down 2 (sort of) in FG range.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Well, I hadn't looked at it at first but if you take out his long carry of the day, he has 8-for-31. Not awful, but not good, either. So, you're probably right.
And the fumble is awful, yes.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
K Moreno fumble ball into enx zone when tyring to score Td. touchback insteda of touchdown.
so that why chargers leading, other reasons- simms played like horirlbe qb and broncos cant stop chargers pasisng attack
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
now score Bengals 14, raiders 10
broncos score field goal too
Sierra nevada gonna be flowing tonight when after raiders win
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Are you saying it wouldn't be flowing if they were to lose?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Orton in pain again. It looks like it's his knee.
13-3 chargers.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Denver tries a surprise onside kick, but fails miserably. I'm sick to my stomack, but that might be all outcome.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I don't think it was a bad call and the Broncos had a shot to recover.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Funky trick play dialled up by Norv. Toss right to LdT, who passes across the field to Rivers, who hits a very open Gates, who was taken out at the 2. Very sweet, and two plays later, LdT gets the score.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
My fault. I insulted LdT earlier.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
SD with a double pass. Rivers --> LT --> Rivers --> Gates ob at the 2.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Nfl.com reporting Warner hurt. Anyone watching?
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I have NE-NYJ (unfortunately). This is what Sportsline has so far: "Cardinals QB Kurt Warner has taken a blow to the head. The team has announced that his return is questionable."
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Earth to BB: you're up 17 points, and you're blowing your final challenge right out of the gate in the second half over something that will be hard to overturn on replay. Really?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
OH MY GOD DID PHIL SIMMS JUST SAY THAT WAS A GOOD CHALLENGE‽‽‽‽
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
All together now:
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Well yes, but this was bad even for him.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
There's a such thing?!
I fear for the universe.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Gah this sucks!! 20-3 with 6 minutes left in the third.
At least I can find some kind of solace in the observation that the Broncos hasn't been outplayed, they've just out-injured and out-mistaked themselves.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
In the first half Leigh Bodden, caught as many Sanchez passes as the entire Jets Team.
Also, what the hell is Bellicheck challenging there?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Having one too many timeouts?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Awesome.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
What's the deal, I thought Triplett learned last week that that down by contact was not a reviewable play?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I don't think even Jeff Triplette knows what goes on inside his head. Yet another reason this was a dumb challenge.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
4th & 5 from the 40 down 17 and the Broncos go for it. TMQ will like this, and I think it's the right call
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I say it's the right call even if you're not down 17:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2618/3688516023_07450826e5_o.png
(This is Brian Burke's 4th down chart--which I agree with completely.)
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Cute chart. Is there a rationale somewhere?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
http://www.advancednflstats.com/2009/09/4th-down-study-part-1.html
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Ok. Moreno's running wild.
His DYAR however will be hurt by opponent adjustment and his costly fumble....
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Broncos don't get it; this is probably over.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The NE-NYJ game is very dull. The Jets have managed a long drive at this point that featured Sanchez's first truly good pass of the day.
And as I type, he completes a beautiful 29-yard TD to Jerricho Cotchery.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Now if you guys will excuse me, I'll make myself some toast, and watch my SB XXXII tape.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Coles just made a great catch for the Bengals. Goodness.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
The Jets are getting after Brady in the second half. They're still having trouble covering Welker, but they're turning this into a game. They just got called for running into the kicker, but it doesn't amount to anything.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
And after a short drive ends with Sanchez throwing off target to a receiver who doesn't even seem to realize that he's playing football (when the ball is near, he ducks like he's thinking, "whoa--what the hell was that?!"), the Jets punt away.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Brady just dragged David Harris about three yards, but he didn't get the first down.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Seriously, did somebody tell Sanchez that Bodden isn't on his team?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
BB probably did, and Sanchez didn't trust him.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I heard that Belichick's own defense doesn't trust him.
Or maybe that was the other way around.
Oh, if only I could remember what they were talking about . . .
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Laurence Maroney, as is his wont, starts looking good all of a sudden. The injury is coming soon.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Here it comes -- 4th and 3 and BB is NOT going for it.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
He didn't go for it.
Come on Jets. Score and make this one interesting again.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Well, not on this drive. Another rookie mistake by Sanchez in throwing an interception while under pressure.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Jets still had a chance... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand it's GONE!
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Sanchez does a good job to buy himself time, then throws the ball to Merriweather instead of just throwing it away. 4 picks today for the Sanchize.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
why is PI on the defense 15 yards or spot and on offense 10 yards?
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
An excellent question--I don't know but it does seem illogical.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
It's just a spot foul in the NFL; in college, it's the lesser of the spot or 15 yards. 10 yards is what the offense gets for holding...
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Moss called for interference--has that ever happened before? Guys who don't fight for the ball don't often get those.
On replay, he's holding Revis who would have had a shot at a pretty easy pick. A smart interference by Moss.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Newsflash: he's not with the raiders any more. Try to keep up.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
He will always be a Viking to me.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Excellent play by Moss.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Moss gets called for PI a lot.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
I'll admit I'm surprised by this information, but, not being a Pats fan or living in the area, I don't watch him all that often.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
How often? I tried to look this up, but the only thing I could find was that the TEAM with the most offensive PI calls through the first half of the year was KC, but with just 4. How many could Moss have? It's rarely called.
Re: Week 11 Open Discussion Thread
Is it just my opinion, or are the Pats more demonstrative than usual in this game. Eddleman all fired up after making a good play, but there has been a lot of that by Pats players. They're not usually like this, are they?
